Massive Access Techniques for the Internet of Things
The course will introduce the concept and design principles of the Internet of Things and in particular of machine-to-machine communications. Special attention will be given to efficient medium access techniques enabling the sharing of the medium among a vast population transmitting sporadically small data packets. The course will cover licensed band solutions, e.g. GSM IoT and Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) as well as unlicensed band solutions as Low Power Long Range (LoRA) and ultra-Narrowband (SigFox). Modern random access alternatives will also be investigated with the help of practical solutions currently standardized.
